Easter is a time when we enjoy a treat or two. Before tucking into your chocolate eggs, consider these facts about the calorie and sugar content to help you enjoy a guilt-free weekend. Use the burnometer (in the challenge article on the right) to check the physical activity needed to offset them!
- A Cream egg contains 177 calories and 26.5g sugar
- Just 9 Mini eggs have 148 calories and 20.5g sugar
- A Malteaster bunny has 157 calories and 15.4g sugar
- A large Easter egg (200g) has 1074 calories and 112g sugar
It is recommended that we don't exceed 30g (equivalent to 7 sugar cubes) of free sugars each day. Easter chocolates are packed with free sugars and calories, as shown in the examples.
Top tips
Plan how you can incorporate your favourite healthier meals into the long weekend so you can save calories to enjoy small chocolate treats on Sunday.
Encourage friends and relatives to give non-chocolate related gifts such as a book, dried fruit or a plant/bunch of flowers.
Remember Easter is really only one day so if you do overindulge don’t fret, just get back on track on Monday!
Egg-citing ways to keep the whole family active
Active egg hunt - combine the hunt with a circuit session with star jumps, squats, lunges, burpees and other exercises at every egg station? You could use hard boiled painted eggs with just one chocolate egg as the overall prize.
Enjoy a walk in a local park and make a day of it by packing a healthy picnic and playing games like rounders, frisbee, tag, cricket or football.
Gardening - get the kids involved in planting flowers or herbs in pots or in the garden, a great way to introduce them to nature and spring.
