“I started jogging, lost 3 stone, and now I'm a run leader!”
It's not common for individuals to join Livewell after already embarking on their lifestyle transformation, but for 51-year-old Craig, that's precisely what happened. After experiencing a heart attack in 2021, Craig realised he needed to make significant changes. He began jogging and lost a stone on his own at the start of 2025. Six months later, Craig has shed an additional two stone, developed a passion for running, and feels healthier than ever, having made great friends along the way.
Craig’s Journey from Couch to 10k and Beyond
"Having a heart attack in 2021 was a major wake-up call. I initially lost weight and improved my fitness, but when my gym closed, I fell back into old habits. Like many, the new year prompted me to refocus, and I decided to try running at the start of this year. I had attempted it alone before but never got far, so I thought joining a group might help. I found Derby Joggers online and signed up for their free January Couch to 5k course. The leaders were welcoming, and the other participants were just as nervous as I was. It wasn't long before we became good friends.
One of the women mentioned she was on the Livewell programme, and I was intrigued by the 12-month plan, which offered plenty of free exercise opportunities and sound healthy eating advice. I registered and joined the April activation at Mackworth Youth and Community Centre with advisors Niamh and Kirsty.
Walking into that first session, I felt apprehensive about what the other people would be like and how the sessions would run. In reality, they were just like me—chatty, friendly, and all there for the same reasons: to lose weight, be healthy, and get fitter. I felt comfortable from the start and have stayed in contact with some of the others since.
Although I knew a lot about eating well, the education section served as an important reminder to consider my food intake more carefully. Over the last couple of years, my portion sizes had increased, and I was indulging in more takeaways than I should. The activation prompted me to rethink my diet and make healthier choices.
Being required to attend weekly sessions and weigh-ins also motivated me to change my behaviour. It was nice to have a weekly focus, see the group, and share experiences. We all had our ups and downs, and sharing our struggles provided us with different perspectives, advice, and support.
I enjoyed the circuit class, which encouraged us to reach our potential at our individual pace and level. That first week, I pushed harder than I thought I would and felt exhausted but glad to have completed it.
It's been great to see everyone improve their fitness as a group. Initially, most people walked the shuttle runs, but by the end of the 10 weeks, most jogged or ran them, with the rest of us cheering them on.
This year, I've not only completed my graduation 5k parkrun but am about to finish my 25th parkrun. I've completed a couple of 10k races, and I have the Derby 10-mile race coming up. My goal is to run a half marathon next spring, and I now run 20 miles a week. I've made lovely friends through Derby Joggers, and I'm so grateful for their support that I trained as a co-leader to inspire and encourage others to experience the same joy and health benefits from running. I've also joined Sinfin Running Club to explore other types of running, such as trail and fell running. I love my running family—it's a hobby I wish I'd taken up a long time ago.
My wife is proud and relieved that I'm doing the best things for my heart health. She's the first, along with my 18-year-old daughter, to cheer me over the finish line. It's wonderful that my daughter, who is training to join the Royal Navy, joins me on runs too. She's surprised at how fast I can go!
Thanks to Livewell and Derby Joggers, I feel better than I have in years. It's amazing what 10 months of fitness and healthier eating can do for your health—I have more energy, I don't get out of breath, and I'm convinced my upcoming heart review with my consultant will be positive. I used to get breathless just walking a short distance; now I can run for miles!"
Livewell advisor, Niamh Cripps added: “It’s been a real pleasure supporting Craig through his first six months with Livewell. His continued dedication to improving his lifestyle is inspiring, and his running achievements are a testament to his hard work and consistency. Well done Craig, and best of luck in your upcoming races!”
